Wait What?
Forget what you know, discover it again.
Forget known ingredients and every recipe and build piece that depends on them. Pick them up again and Valheim rediscovers the recipes the vanilla way. Great for cleaning up your progression after a visit to a different world.
Features
- Ctrl + Alt + F opens the Wait What? window.
- Forget by biome: select whole biomes (Meadows to Deep North) to forget all their ingredients.
- Forget single ingredients: search by name and select them one by one.
- Forget everything: one checkbox selects all eligible known ingredients.
- Preview first: see every recipe and build piece you would lose, grouped by ingredient, before you confirm.
- Vanilla rediscovery: pick the ingredients up again and the game unlocks the recipes as usual.
There is no undo! Forgotten ingredients and recipes only come back by picking the ingredients up again.
Quick start
- Press Ctrl + Alt + F
- Check biomes, single ingredients or Forget all known recipes
- Click Preview selection, check the list, then Forget x recipes

Manual:
- Install BepInExPack for Valheim
- Copy
WaitWhat.dllandWaitWhat.ingredients.txtinto<Valheim>/BepInEx/plugins(both files in the same folder). - Start the game.
Client only: Wait What? only changes your own character. It does not need to be installed on the server or by other players, and it works on any server.
Uninstalling: remove WaitWhat.dll and WaitWhat.ingredients.txt. What your character has forgotten stays forgotten until you pick the ingredients up again.
How it works
Valheim unlocks a recipe or build piece as soon as your character knows all its ingredients and its crafting station. Wait What? removes ingredients from your character's knowledge, and with them every known recipe and build piece that Valheim would no longer unlock without them.
- Recipes that need only one of several ingredients (for example any fish for a fish dish) stay known as long as one of them is still known.
- Seasonal recipes (for example Yule) are forgotten too, also outside their season. Valheim rediscovers them once their season is active again.
- Recipes that cannot be learned from ingredient knowledge stay known. Ingredients used only by such recipes are hidden from the selection.
- Other ingredients, trophies, crafting stations, biomes and all other progression stay untouched.
- Single recipes cannot be forgotten directly - you always forget ingredients.
The window
- Forget all known recipes: selects all selectable ingredients, also those without a biome.
- Forget all from biome: one checkbox per biome with the number of selectable ingredients from that biome. Biomes without selectable ingredients are hidden.
- Forget all with ingredient: known ingredients used by recipes or build pieces that your character meets the discovery requirements for, with a search field. The search is not case-sensitive and also finds technical names (for example "copper" in a German game).
- Ingredients that no known, discoverable recipe or build piece uses are greyed out and cannot be selected.
- Different items that share the same ingredient knowledge (for example Ectoplasm and Voidplasm) have separate entries with their prefab names and icons. Selecting or forgetting either affects both; the preview shows the effects of their shared knowledge.
- Below the list you see how many known recipes your selection would forget.
- Preview selection lists the recipes and build pieces per ingredient, with icons. Ingredients still in your inventory are marked red and listed at the top: they would be relearned instantly.
- Escape or the hotkey closes the window; in the preview, Escape goes back to the selection. While the window is open, game controls (movement, hotbar, map, chat) are blocked. Opening it closes the inventory, build menu, large map and trader window.
Configuration
BepInEx/config/de.evabs.valheim.waitwhat.cfg is created on first start:
- ToggleKey: hotkey to open and close the window. Default: Left Ctrl + Left Alt + F.
Ingredient file
WaitWhat.ingredients.txt (next to the DLL) assigns every vanilla ingredient to one biome. It is plain text and read each time the window opens, so you can edit it while the game runs:
[Mistlands]
BlackMarble
Sap
[Biome]starts a group; each following line names one ingredient by its prefab name.#starts a comment.- Each ingredient belongs to the first biome that lists it. Unknown names are ignored.
- Intermediate products (bronze, iron, linen thread, ...) are listed explicitly.
- Back up your edits before updating the mod - an update replaces the file.
Adding more items
You can add any item that recipes use as an ingredient, for example items from other mods (without an entry you can still find and forget them with the search). Write its prefab name in a new line under the biome you want; you can also add new biome groups.
The prefab name is the item's internal name, not the name shown in the game. It is the same name you use with the console command spawn, and the Valheim wiki lists it as "Item ID" (for example BlackMarble for Black Marble, LinenThread for Linen Thread). Item lists of other mods usually name it as well. Upper and lower case do not matter.

Close and open the window to see the change.
Known consequences
- Valheim systems that check known items follow your new knowledge, for example which raids can happen.
- The crafting window can show forgotten ingredients of recipes you still know as unknown until you pick them up again.
Compatibility
Recipes and build pieces of other mods are forgotten by the same rule as vanilla ones.

Changelog
- 1.0.2 – Ingredients used only by recipes or build pieces that the character cannot discover from ingredient knowledge are hidden. Ectoplasm, Voidplasm and other items with shared knowledge have separate entries and icons, with linked selection and a shared-knowledge notice. Corrected biome assignments for trader ingredients, Writhan roots and ectoplasm. Forge of Potential idols and other upgrade-only resources are excluded from the ingredient list and recipe-loss dependencies.
- 1.0.1 – Seasonal recipes are forgotten too. Opening the window closes the build menu, large map and trader window, so clicks no longer reach them. Smoother preview with many recipes. A locked ingredient file no longer stops the window from opening.
- 1.0.0 – First release.
