Description

Freyr's PrayPal (Version 0.2.0)

Oh god, is it raining AGAIN? Search the Black Forest, build this godly gadget and pray to Freyr. If he likes your offering, the sun will shine. If not - well, you'll see. Terms apply: No divine intervention in certain lands or precarious situations - it won't save your ass.

This mod provides config options for freezing weather on/off and immersive or wacky mod style (messages, texts, names, descriptions). Where to find the materials for building the PrayPal is hidden in the Spoilers section at the end.

Freyr's PrayPal on Thunderstore | Nexus Mods | Hexium

Features

  • Freyr's PrayPal: a small wooden idol of Freyr, the moody god of harvest and weather (Freyr's Idol in the immersive text style)
  • Fair weather: offer valuables to Freyr and the sun shines around your PrayPal
  • Offerings: coins and other valuables pay for days of fair weather
  • Freyr's mood: don't give him junk if you want to avoid weather surprises
  • Freyr's wrath: gods don't take kindly to being attacked
  • Powerless: Freyr can't help during raids, bossfights and in certain biomes
  • Multiplayer: neighbours share the sky, the first offering takes priority
  • Config: freezing weather from moods and wrath can be turned off; select wacky or immersive mod style

Requirements and installation

Install with a mod manager, or manually: put FreyrsPrayPal.dll into BepInEx/plugins/. The config file is automatically created by BepInEx.

Multiplayer: every player and the server need the mod. Players with a different minor version (e.g. 0.1 vs 0.2) cannot join.

Getting started

  1. Collect 4 Freyr Carvings (see Spoilers). Picking up the first one unlocks the recipe.
  2. Build Freyr's PrayPal with the hammer, no workbench needed. Cost: 4 Freyr Carvings, 10 Resin.
  3. Use Make Offering to open the bowl and put in valuables.
  4. Close the bowl. Freyr takes his due, his eyes glow green, and the sun comes out.

The weather area

  • Fair weather covers a 184 m radius around the PrayPal, at any height. That is about the width of the minimap at full zoom.

  • Walking in or out, the weather blends over like in vanilla (about 10 seconds).

  • Fair weather is the best weather of the biome the PrayPal stands in:

    • Meadows: Clear
    • Black Forest: Forest mist (its usual weather)
    • Mountain: Calm snowfall instead of a snow storm
    • Plains: Clear heath
    • Mistlands: Clear (the biome's own mist stays)
    • Deep North: Twilight clear
    • Ocean: Clear
  • Wetness, cold and freezing follow the weather, so fair weather keeps you dry. Plants grow normally.

  • Lands without influence: in the Swamp and the Ashlands, Freyr has no power. You can build the PrayPal there, but it stays inactive and takes nothing. You get the message "Freyr has no power in these lands".

  • Raids, bosses and events with their own weather always come first. Freyr does not keep a boss fight dry. Building a PrayPal during such weather shows "Freyr cannot wield his powers at this time".

  • Dungeons and other places with their own weather keep it.

Offerings

  • Bowl: 4 slots for materials (coins, ores, gems, etc.) and consumables (food, potions). No equipment, trophies, fish or quest items.
  • Cost: 10 gold per day. The current day is charged immediately, even if only partly used. Further days are charged each morning.
  • Values: Coin 1, amber 5, amber pearl / ancient coin 10, ruby 20, silver necklace 30, gems 55 / 95 / 135 / 175.
  • Payment: Freyr takes valuables from top left to bottom right. Coins are taken in exact amounts (14 coins → 10 taken). Other valuables buy as many full days as their value allows, with any remainder kept as a tip (green gem worth 55 → 5 days).
  • Loaded days only: Unloaded days are neither charged nor billed later.
  • Refills: Add offerings anytime to extend the duration. Items can be removed until Freyr takes them.
  • Bowl interaction: Offerings are processed when the bowl is closed, not while someone is using it.
  • Access: Anyone permitted by the ward, or everyone if no ward is present.
  • Hover: Shows Freyr's mood, paid days or inactive status.
  • Eyes: Green when paid, red when displeased or wrathful, dark when inactive or powerless.
  • No refunds: Prepaid days are lost when destroying an active PrayPal.

Freyr's Mood

  • Unworthy offerings: If payment falls below 10 gold, Freyr takes all remaining valuables. If there are none, he takes one item from the first accepted slot.
  • Punishment: Freyr is offended. Everyone in his area sees "Freyr mocks the offering" (immersive: "Freyr deems the offering unworthy"), and he summons random bad weather for the day. His eyes turn red.
  • Weather: Never the biome's fair weather or the same weather as before.
  • Empty bowl: No punishment; the PrayPal simply turns inactive.
  • No escape: An offended Freyr prevents hammer removal until the next morning: "Freyr is unimpressed by your tiny hammer" (immersive: "Freyr resists your destructive hammer").

Freyr's Wrath

  • Trigger: Strike an influential PrayPal, paid or not, and Freyr summons the worst storm until next morning: "Freyr is raising a storm".
  • Punishment: Red eyes, "Freyr is furious today" (immersive: "Freyr's wrath rages in the skies today"), no hammer removal until morning.
  • Destruction: Destroying the PrayPal (2000 HP) ends the storm immediately.
  • Payment: The day counts as paid; offerings remain untouched. Existing fair weather turns into a storm. Normal payments resume next morning, or the PrayPal becomes inactive.
  • No influence: A PrayPal blocked by an active neighbouring PrayPal raises no storm: "Freyr is too busy to rage right now" (immersive: "Freyr spares you this time, his gaze is elsewhere").
  • Creatures: Enemy attacks do not trigger Freyr's wrath.

Neighbours

  • No limit: Place as many PrayPals as you like. Areas may overlap, and everyone shares the weather, like a neighbour's music.
  • First wins: A PrayPal's run starts with its first paid day and continues as long as each day is paid. Freyr's mood does not interrupt it.
  • Too close (under 184 m): A later PrayPal refuses offerings without consuming them: "Freyr is already weathering elsewhere" (immersive: "Freyr already commands the skies nearby").
  • Overlapping areas (184–368 m): Both operate, but the earlier PrayPal controls the weather where their areas overlap.
  • Rebuilding: A rebuilt PrayPal starts a new run and loses priority to existing ones.

Configuration

File: BepInEx/config/de.evabs.valheim.freyrspraypal.cfg, or in-game with a configuration manager if you have one.

FreezingMoodWeather in Weather:

  • Freyr's mood and wrath may also bring freezing weather (snow, snow storm, twilight). Freezing drains health and can kill players who have not progressed far enough. Off: the wrath storm is a thunderstorm instead.
  • Admin only, synced from the server to all players.
  • Range: true / false
  • Default: true

Style in Texts:

  • Wacky: playful texts, the piece is called Freyr's PrayPal. Immersive: lore-friendly texts, the piece is called Freyr's Idol. Only texts change, not the gameplay.
  • Local setting, every player chooses their own. Takes effect after restarting the game.
  • Range: Wacky / Immersive
  • Default: Wacky

Compatibility

Freyr's PrayPal changes the weather only inside a PrayPal's area. Other mods that change the weather (e.g. Seasonality) were not tested together with it.

Known limitations

  • Neighbours: a PrayPal only sees other PrayPals that are loaded for the paying player. At the edge of the area, an earlier PrayPal may be unloaded, and then both take their offering. The same can happen when two players pray at neighbouring inactive PrayPals at the same moment. In both cases the earlier one still decides the weather where the areas overlap.
  • Not yet tested on a dedicated server.

Changelog

  • 0.2.0 – Text style config: wacky or immersive texts (the piece becomes Freyr's Idol). Reworked texts. Freyr's wrath has its own hover text. Without freezing weather, the wrath storm is now a thunderstorm instead of an ash storm; the wrath storms no longer come from Freyr's mood. Not compatible with 0.1 in multiplayer.
  • 0.1.0 – First release.

Where to find Freyr Carvings

  • Greydwarf shamans drop exactly one Freyr Carving per kill with a 50 % chance, starred ones too.
  • Picking up your first carving unlocks the PrayPal recipe.
  • This works in existing worlds as well: the drop is rolled on every kill.
