Description

Lost Scrolls II

Free the fallen instead of fighting them. Subdue a corrupted Dvergr, perform the Communion Rite, and it becomes a lasting companion — one that fights beside you, levels up, tends your workstations, sails your ships, spars with other players' companions, and follows you through portals.

A spiritual sequel to the deprecated mod Lost Scrolls (TaegukGaming), rebuilt from scratch as a new vanilla-assets-only Valheim mod. Every recruitable Dvergr is an existing vanilla creature with new behavior — no custom models, textures, sounds, or asset bundles.

Features

  • Recruit companions — perform the Communion Rite on a subdued Dvergr to free and recruit it. Rogue, Fire Mage, Ice Mage, and Support Mage castes.
  • Level them up — companions earn XP (1→10) and grow stronger, with per-caste bonuses. Progress saves on the creature and survives relogs.
  • Command them — hover + hotkey: feed/heal (G), cycle Follow/Guard/Standby stance (E), open its inventory + rename (Y), and see them on your private minimap. A Follow ally fights what threatens you and breaks off anything that drags it too far away; Standby and chore-assigned allies hold their ground and only defend themselves.
  • Give them a pack — each companion carries its own 4×2 inventory (opens like a chest). It picks up loot it already carries, eats food for a temporary HP boost, drinks health/resistance meads, and gets encumbered if overloaded. Its pack rides along through totems and drops on death.
  • Move the storage window — drag the chest/storage window (companion packs and vanilla chests alike) anywhere on screen by grabbing an empty part of it; your position is remembered. By default it sits two inventory rows lower, so extra rows from other inventory mods stay visible.
  • Put them to work — assign allies to vanilla stations by caste: smelting, refining, cooking, brewing, farming (plant + harvest), herding, and hauling. One ally tends every job of its kind within 20 m, and files what it makes into a chest.
  • Duel — non-lethal companion-vs-companion sparring between players for bonus XP (J), or gather a party and fight team-vs-team (K).
  • Rankings — every duel win feeds a persistent, server-wide duel ladder (Elo rating shown on the companion's name), with a separate party ladder for team fights. Open the ranking board with F6 to read both. Name your team with de_party_name, and seasons reset the boards.
  • Tournaments — open the tournament panel with F7: enter by locking a companion's Communion Totem into a slot, and it's held safely until the bracket is done. When an admin starts a round your companion is summoned automatically (at full health) to fight its assigned opponent, then sealed back into its totem with any XP it earned. Choose single elimination, double elimination, or round robin for 1v1 or party, with an optional level-gated entry for themed events; the bracket shows companion levels and a live standings table. A champion prize and a Hall of Champions round it out. Admins get every control as a button — pick the format, start, begin, activate the round, forfeit, release a totem, cancel.
  • Bounty hunting (server feature) — hardened Dvergr who attack on sight, posted with escorts on a Wanted Board (F8, or the Bounty Board button on your inventory screen). Take a posting, travel to the mark, and kill it or free it with the Rite — both pay, in things that take a forge or a cooking fire to make. A quest with Haldor opens the board; a hunters' leaderboard tracks who answers the most, and the toughest postings are reserved for the top of the duel ladder. Needs BiomeLords + ServerGuide + Valheim Donations on the server — see below.
  • Discord announcements (optional) — duel wins, a new #1 on either ladder, and tournament champions can be posted to your server's Discord (needs the ServerGuide companion mod + a webhook).
  • Communion Totems — seal a companion into a carriable totem (at an Incinerator, using Wisps) and summon it back later, level intact.
  • Travel together — Follow-stance allies board your ship and teleport through portals with you. If your server runs InterServerPortal, they come along through its network portals too, and an inter-server crossing seals them into their totems so they can be summoned again on the other side.
  • Rest at camp to mend them — sit by a fire, or shelter under a roof with one lit, and every Follow companion beside you heals back to full over a couple of minutes.
  • Find & remember them — companions show as tinted player-icon pins on your private map, and leave a named death marker where they fall.

Setup

Valheim 1.0 required. 0.12.1 is built against Valheim 1.0.7 and will not load on an older game version. If you are still on a pre-1.0 build, stay on 0.11.0.

  1. Install via your mod manager (Gale (recommended) / r2modman / Thunderstore Mod Manager). BepInEx is pulled in automatically.
  2. Launch Valheim and load a world.
  3. Fight a Dvergr down to low health without killing it, then hold your Block button with the crosshair on it to channel the Communion Rite (you can keep blocking/dodging). Hold it through the struggle and it's now your ally.

Install on the server and on every client in multiplayer. Some features (duels) are multiplayer by design.

Companion mod — required for rankings & tournaments

Install Valheim ServerGuide (0.9.0 or newer) if you want the ranking and tournament features — 0.15.0 or newer for bounty hunting.

Lost Scrolls II uses ServerGuide as its messaging and reward engine. Without it the ranking and tournament systems are effectively silent — no rank-up announcements, no milestone or champion rewards, no tournament join/pairing/result messages, and no Discord posts. You also need the guidance files — download them from the guidance/ folder in the repo and drop them into BepInEx/config/ValheimServerGuide/LostScrollsII/. (They used to ship as the Lost Scrolls II — Quest package, which is discontinued as of 0.10.0.)

To be precise about what still works without ServerGuide: the ladders themselves keep recording, and F6 / de_ladder still show the standings — you just lose everything that tells players about it.

ServerGuide also delivers the mod's story and the in-game Companion Handbook. All the non-competitive gameplay (recruiting, leveling, chores, totems, travel) works fully on its own.

Bounty hunting — a server feature

Bounty hunting runs only on a server (or local host) that has all three of BiomeLords, ValheimServerGuide and Valheim Donations installed, plus the guidance files in its config folder. It is deliberately all-or-nothing: the reward tables live in ServerGuide, the difficulty tiers echo BiomeLords' biome progression, and the optional coin payouts go through Valheim Donations' own ledger.

Everywhere else — including single player — the F8 panel and the inventory button still work, and explain what bounty hunting is and where it runs. Nothing else in the mod changes.

Server admins: every knob lives under Bounty in the config (difficulty curve, escort size, board size and rotation, spawn placement, the elite rank gate). Set Bounty/Enabled = false to switch it off on a server that would otherwise qualify; the log line [bounty] feature gate: ON/OFF (...) says which condition decided.

Discord announcements additionally need the server to set DiscordWebhookUrl in the ServerGuide config.

Changelog

0.12.1 Latest

Fixed: the chest/storage window could only be dragged into the top half of the screen. Drag it toward the bottom and it slid back up, and the position was never saved.

The window is now free to go anywhere, and where you drop it is remembered again. If you tried to move it before and gave up, it will work now — drag it from any empty part of the panel.

(For the curious: the code that keeps the window from being lost off-screen was measuring its position in the wrong units, so it thought the panel was always falling off the bottom and nudged it upward — on every frame and every mouse movement, faster than you could drag it down. It now measures correctly, and only tidies up once when you let go of the mouse instead of arguing with you the whole way.)

0.12.0

Valheim 1.0 compatibility. On Valheim 1.0 the mod did not load at all — not one feature. This release fixes that, and changes how the mod fails so a single game update can never do it again.

This build requires Valheim 1.0.7. It will not load on an older game version — stay on 0.11.0 if you have not updated. There are no gameplay changes in this release.

What was wrong

Valheim 1.0 added an argument to a method the companion-totem tooltip hooks into. That one hook stopped matching — and because the mod applied all of its patches as a single batch, the first failure threw away every patch behind it. Recruiting, chores, duels, rankings, tournaments, bounties and totems were all disabled by a cosmetic tooltip.

A second 1.0 change (an extra argument on the console-command constructor) meant the old build also broke every mod's console commands, not just this one's, on any server it was installed on.

What changed

  • Patches are applied one at a time now. If a future game update moves something, only the feature that depends on it stops working — the rest of the mod carries on, and the log names exactly what failed. Server owners: after a Valheim update, check LogOutput.log for [patch] lines before assuming everything is fine.
  • Eight places updated for 1.0 — the totem tooltip and its save/load path, companion pack loading, smelter and fermenter chores, the Cultivator field marker, and the console commands.

If you use the ServerGuide companion mod

Item rewards from guidance throw an error on Valheim 1.0 with ServerGuide 0.15.0 or older. Update ServerGuide to 0.16.0+ alongside this release. Rankings, tournaments and bounties are unaffected in themselves — they record and display without it — but their guidance-delivered rewards need it.

0.11.0

The chore system grew up. One ally now runs a whole workshop instead of one machine, the Rogue took over the herds, and the farmer learned to actually farm.

One worker, a whole workshop

  • A chore is a patch of ground, not a station. Post an ally at a smelter and it tends every smelter, kiln and blast furnace within about 20 metres, walking from one to the next. One Support Mage runs a whole kitchen. (Tunable: Chores/ChoreWorkRadius.)
  • Several allies can share one patch. Press the chore key again to add another worker to the same ground. To take one off, press it on that ally.
  • A stuck machine no longer starves the rest. A furnace with no ore anywhere, or a brew left open to the sky, is set aside for a minute while the worker gets on with the others — and it tells you what was wrong.
  • The post outlives its parts. Harvest the crop you assigned at, cull the animal, tear down one furnace of six: the chore carries on. It ends when you recall the ally, or when nothing of its kind has been there for a minute.
  • Workers stand at the machine they're working instead of reaching for it from across the room.
  • Doors are no longer a wall. Allies open a closed door in their way and shut it behind them. Locked doors and other people's warded doors are left alone.

Everything a chore makes goes into a chest

  • Smelted bars, cooked food, burnt food, tapped mead, eggs, the harvest — none of it is left on the floor now. The ally files it in the nearest chest that already holds that item, moves to the next one when that fills, and tells you when nothing will take it.
  • Chests, barrels and carts all count. The Obliterator, gravestones, ship holds, other players' personal chests and chests inside someone else's ward never do.
  • It only stows what the station makes — ore you dropped beside a smelter is left alone.

The Rogue keeps the herds, and clears the ground

  • Husbandry moved from the Support Mage to the Rogue, and it now culls. It leaves three grown animals of each kind, spares the young and the pregnant, kills with a blade at arm's reach — never at range — and stores the meat and hides. Valheim stops a pen breeding at four of a kind, so that turnover is what keeps it producing. (Tunable: Chores/HusbandryCullLimit; 0 disables culling.)
  • Hauling is the same job. Post a Rogue at an animal or at a chest and it does both: tends the herd and sweeps loose items into your chests.
  • The one thing it leaves lying is food the herd eats. That was put there on purpose.

Farming, properly

  • Give the mage a Cultivator and press the chore key on the ally itself — a field is ground, not a machine, so the tool is the switch. Take the Cultivator back and it stops.
  • It plants a tidy square block, aligned to a grid, and lines its rows up with what's already in the bed. A new farmer sows 2×2; the block grows as it levels, and it harvests by the same armful.
  • One crop per field while the seed lasts — and when that seed runs out it fills the rest of the bed with whatever else it can reach, rather than standing idle.
  • It takes seed from its own pack first, then every chest in range, and it only plants where you could have planted by hand: around rocks, wild growth and build pieces, never into them.
  • It harvests the field, not the countryside — no more stripping the stones, mushrooms and dandelions around your bed.
  • If a seed can't grow where you've posted it, it says so and names the biome.

Kitchen work

  • A mage keeps to one kind of station: the cookfires, or the stone oven, or the fermenters. A cook that wanders is never where the food is when it finishes. Staff the rest with more allies.
  • Nothing burns. A station holding finished food jumps the queue, a visit clears the whole rack, and the ally checks back every second while anything is waiting.
  • The cook keeps its own fire in, feeding it wood from a chest and relighting a hearth that went out.

Companions on the map

  • A pin never disappears just because you walked away. The ally you left tending a smelter at home stays on your map at the spot you left it — across the world, and across a relog. A pin goes only when the companion really is gone: it died, or you sealed it into a totem. Summon it back and its pin returns.

Fixes

  • Renaming a companion no longer fires your hotkeys. Typing a name with E in it closed the panel; letters bound to other mods set those off. The name field is now read-only until you click Rename, and while you're typing every key is dead until you click Save.
  • Stances survive a relog. An ally left on Guard or Standby stayed there; it used to come back on Follow. Chore workers too — they no longer walk home for a moment before returning to work.
  • Starting a chore ends the stance the ally was in, so a Follow companion stops trailing you the moment it gets to work.
  • The castes stopped sharing chores. A Fire Mage was collecting the eitr refinery's output and an Ice Mage the smelter's bars.
  • A chore that ends by itself leaves the ally on Standby, holding its post, instead of walking home. Only a recall you issued brings it back to your side.
  • Your own warded base no longer blocks your own allies from using its chests.
  • Fixed a crash when a cooking station was destroyed under a working companion.
