Valheim Runestone
A full collectible card game built inside Valheim itself. Collect cards from creatures, chests, and traders as you explore, build a deck, and battle the AI — or challenge another player on your server to a live networked duel with real rewards on the line.
Features
- 92 cards across Creatures, Bosses, Equipment, and Items, spanning every biome from Meadows to Ashlands — including named cards for Haldor, Hildir, Bog Witch, and Odin.
- Real acquisition, not menus — cards drop from creatures you kill, from world loot chests, and are purchasable from Haldor, Hildir, and the Bog Witch. No separate currency or grind; just play Valheim.
- Full deck builder with 6 pre-built starter decks plus unlimited custom decks, saved and named however you like.
- Solo play against an AI opponent, any time, from a floating board button that follows you around the world.
- Live PvP duels — challenge another player on your server directly; a duel plays out in real time with the same rules as solo play, fully synced between both clients.
- Real rewards — winning a match against the AI grants actual Valheim items and materials, gated by which bosses you've defeated so early rewards can't skip ahead of your progression. PvP wins grant coins scaled to how much health you had left.
- A card folder to browse your full collection, and a draggable, resizable UI that stays out of your way.
- Deep configuration — trader prices, reward drop rates, reward contents per tier, and match-balance settings (including an optional "sudden death" for matches that run long) are all adjustable via BepInEx's config system, with settings that matter for fairness synced automatically to every player on a server.
Installation
Install with a mod manager (Gale, r2modman, etc.), or manually: drop the ValheimRunestone folder into BepInEx/plugins. Requires Jötunn, the Valheim Library — a mod manager will install it automatically as a dependency.
Works for both single-player and multiplayer servers. For PvP duels to work between players, everyone who wants to duel needs the mod installed — card collection and solo play work fine even for players who don't.
Configuration
The config file is generated at BepInEx/config/com.monkeymagicman.valheimrunestone.cfg after the first launch, and can be edited directly or through BepInEx's Configuration Manager in-game (F1, if you have Configuration Manager installed). Sections:
- Traders — the coin price for cards sold by Haldor, Hildir, and the Bog Witch.
- Rewards - General — whether match rewards are granted at all, and how many coins a PvP win pays per point of health remaining.
- Rewards - Drop Rates — the relative chance of landing each of the 6 reward tiers after an AI match win.
- Rewards - Tier Contents — exactly what each tier can grant, including biome gating and one-time-only items.
- Match Balance — the rune cap and various timeouts (deck selection, duel challenges).
- Match Balance - Sudden Death — whether health starts draining on long matches to push them toward an end, and how aggressively.
- Diagnostics — off by default. Includes verbose trader-purchase logging for troubleshooting, and a gate for two debug-only console commands (
runestone_grantallcards,runestone_clearcards) that stay disabled unless explicitly turned on, since one of them permanently wipes your collection.
Most gameplay-affecting settings are synced from the server to every connected client automatically, so a server admin only needs to configure them once.
Compatibility
Requires Jötunn (installed automatically as a dependency by most mod managers).
Includes built-in compatibility handling for VikingOS — if detected, its "Ornate Frames" decoration is automatically toggled off for the moment this mod's board or menus are open, and restored the instant they close, so the two mods don't visually conflict. No action needed if you don't have VikingOS installed.
No other known conflicts. If something looks wrong alongside another UI-modifying mod, let us know on Discord.
Credits
Built with Jötunn, the Valheim Library by the Valheim Modding community, without which a mod like this wouldn't be feasible.
