Description

SouthsilArmor Localization Patch

A client-side localization patch for SouthsilArmor.

It adds external YAML localization support for SouthsilArmor item names, item descriptions, Set Effect names, and Set Effect descriptions without changing gameplay stats or networked data.

New Translatations:

Discord Contact: https://discord.gg/wnfKPuJ8k and speak to ZenouvIX or Morgnar.

Features

  • Localizes SouthsilArmor item names and descriptions.
  • Localizes Set Effect names and tooltips, including effects that are stored as fixed English text in the original assets.
  • Automatically follows Valheim's selected language.
  • Uses English as a fallback when a translation is missing.
  • Creates editable translation files in: BepInEx/config/SouthsilLocalization/
  • Community-friendly: copy the English YAML, rename it to a supported Valheim language, and translate only the values.
  • Author-friendly: every SouthsilArmor.*.yml file placed in the project's Localization folder is automatically embedded into the DLL on the next build and extracted for users on first run.
  • No YamlDotNet, Newtonsoft.Json, Jotunn, ServerSync, RPCs, or network synchronization required.

Included translations

  • English
  • Portuguese (Brazil)

Additional community translations can be bundled simply by adding their YAML file to the project's Localization folder before building.

Installation

Mod manager

Install the package normally with your Hexium-compatible mod manager.

Manual

  1. Install BepInEx for Valheim.
  2. Install SouthsilArmor.
  3. Place SouthsilLocalizationPatch.dll anywhere inside BepInEx/plugins/.
  4. Start Valheim once.

The plugin will create:

BepInEx/config/SouthsilLocalization/
├── SouthsilArmor.English.yml
├── SouthsilArmor.Portuguese_Brazilian.yml
├── ...other bundled languages...
├── README_TRANSLATION.txt
└── Diagnostics.txt

Creating your own translation

  1. Open: BepInEx/config/SouthsilLocalization/
  2. Copy: SouthsilArmor.English.yml
  3. Rename the copy to: SouthsilArmor.<ValheimLanguage>.yml
  4. Translate only the text after each :. Do not rename or remove the keys.
  5. Restart the game or change the language in Valheim to reload localization.

Example:

item_neckhelm: "Neck-King Crown"
itemdesc_neckhelm: "A crown of jewels and boar tusks, proclaiming you King of the Mighty Necks!"

seteffect_southsil_neck: "King of the Necks"
seteffectdesc_southsil_neck: "Behold! You can swim strongly and resist poison, like your subjects."

For Brazilian Portuguese, the filename is:

SouthsilArmor.Portuguese_Brazilian.yml

The current Valheim language identifiers recognized by the game include:

Chinese, Chinese_Trad, Czech, Danish, Dutch, English, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Hungarian, Japanese, Korean, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese_Brazilian, Portuguese_European, Russian, Slovak, Spanish, Swedish, Turkish.

For translators who want their language bundled

Send the completed YAML file to the mod author.

The author only needs to place it in:

Localization/

using the filename:

SouthsilArmor.<ValheimLanguage>.yml

and rebuild the project. The .csproj automatically embeds every matching YAML file into the DLL. No C# code changes are needed.

On first launch, every embedded language is extracted automatically to BepInEx/config/SouthsilLocalization/.

Existing user-edited files are never overwritten. When a newer bundled file contains new keys, only the missing keys are appended.

Configuration

BepInEx creates:

BepInEx/config/com.zeno.southsilarmor.localization.cfg

Normally leave this empty:

[Localization]

LanguageOverride =

To force a language for testing:

LanguageOverride = Portuguese_Brazilian

Multiplayer / client-side status

SouthsilArmor Localization Patch is client-side only.

The plugin only changes local display strings:

  • ItemDrop item name
  • ItemDrop item description
  • StatusEffect display name
  • StatusEffect tooltip
  • Valheim localization words

It does not:

  • send or receive custom RPCs;
  • synchronize configuration;
  • modify item IDs, prefab IDs, recipes, damage, armor, resistances, or Set Effect gameplay values;
  • write networked world state.

Dedicated servers are detected through Valheim's batch mode and the plugin disables itself before installing Harmony patches or loading localization files.

Therefore this localization patch does not need to be installed on a dedicated server. It also does not change SouthsilArmor's own multiplayer/install requirements.

Troubleshooting

Check:

BepInEx/config/SouthsilLocalization/Diagnostics.txt

and search BepInEx/LogOutput.log for:

SouthsilArmor Localization Patch

The diagnostics file shows the detected language, loaded YAML file, and how many SouthsilArmor item/status-effect objects were matched.

If language detection is wrong, temporarily set LanguageOverride in the plugin config.

Dependency

Requires SouthsilArmor.

Changelog

2.5.0 Latest
  • Changed the project so every Localization/SouthsilArmor.*.yml file is embedded automatically at build time.
  • Added automatic extraction of all bundled community translations to BepInEx/config/SouthsilLocalization/.
  • Kept local user translations editable: existing values are preserved and only missing bundled keys are appended.
  • Made dedicated-server behavior explicitly client-only: the plugin now exits before creating config/localization files or applying Harmony patches when batch mode is detected.
  • Added Hexium/Thunderstore-compatible package metadata and English documentation.
  • Added an English translator guide with current Valheim language identifiers.
2.4.0
  • Prevented forced Localization.instance initialization.
  • Added dedicated-server safe mode to avoid localization initialization conflicts.
2.3.0
  • Fixed language detection priority so Valheim PlayerPrefs wins over temporary English startup values.
