Installing motor_boatin (Steam Engine mod)
This adds a Steam Engine to Valheim - a Stone Oven you can build on any ship that drives it forward at full speed regardless of wind, once it's fueled.
Everyone in the group needs this installed - the mod changes ship physics, so if only some players have it, you'll get kicked for a version mismatch when joining a game with someone who doesn't (or does).
1. Get a mod manager (skip if you already have one)
Download Thunderstore Mod Manager or r2modman (either works the same way) from thunderstore.io - search "Valheim", pick any mod, and use its "Download with Mod Manager" button, which will offer to install one for you.
2. Install the two mods this depends on
Open the mod manager, create (or pick) a profile for your Valheim group, and install these from its search/browse screen - both are normal public Thunderstore mods:
- BepInExPack Valheim (by denikson) - the modding framework everything else needs
- Jotunn (by ValheimModding), version 2.30.0 or newer
3. Drop in the Steam Engine mod itself
This one isn't on Thunderstore (yet) - install it by hand:
- In the mod manager, find the button to open your profile's folder (usually "Settings" -> "Browse profile folder", or similar).
- Go into
BepInEx\plugins\. - Extract
MotorBoatin-0.1.0.ziphere, so you end up withBepInEx\plugins\MotorBoatin\MotorBoatin.dll.
4. Launch through the mod manager
Use the mod manager's "Start modded" / play button rather than launching Valheim directly from Steam - that's what actually loads BepInEx and your mods.
Using it in-game
- Build a Stonecutter if you don't have one.
- Open the Hammer, go to the Stonecutter tab, and build the Steam Engine on your ship's deck (same materials as a Stone Oven: Iron / Stone / Surtling Core).
- Feed it wood the same way you would a Stone Oven.
- While it's lit and your speed is set to Half or Full, the ship drives at full speed no matter which way the wind is blowing.
Updating later
If a new version comes around, just repeat step 3 with the new zip - it overwrites the
old MotorBoatin.dll in the same folder.
